BGS 12th Research Conference, Aberystwyth

The 12th biennial BGS Research Conference is set to take place this year at Aberystwyth University's Penglais Campus. Everyone with an interest in grassland is encouraged to attend to interact with colleagues and present their work on topics including agriculture, ecology, ecosystem services, conservation and biodiversity, microbiology, geology, soils and other grassland and forage-based areas.

Conference & conference tours

The conference begins after lunch on Monday 7th and concludes at lunch time on Wednesday 9th, with a conference dinner on the evening of Tuesday 8th. Please click here to view our flyer for details. The conference will include sessions from invited speakers and an opportunities to present work as oral and poster communications. There will be a choice of three technical tours on the Tuesday afternoon.

Tour 1 IBERS Gogerddan Research Unit  - visit the field plots of the forage grass and legume breeding groups and see how selection for agronomic and environmental traits are integrated into the plant breeding programmes. The tour will include a visit to the National Phenomics Centre, animal research facilities and biorenewable and bioenergy research projects.

Tour 2 Pwllpeiran Upland Research Platform - see a broad range of vegetation types, from intensively-managed improved swards to mountain pastures. The semi-natural communities present include habitats of international conservation importance as well as key vegetation types with regards to water and soil carbon management.

Tour 3 BGS UK Grassland Farmer of the Year 2014 winner's farm - Dafydd Jones farms the 190ha (470 acre) upland organic farm near Machynlleth, reaching up to 300m (1000ft). He impressed the judges in last year's competiton by implementing simple and efficient techniques, using stock as a tool for grassland management and weed control. See some of the 750 ewes and 70 suckler cows and calves grazing clover rich pasture.
