BGS, RABDF and DairyCo are pleased to announce that the annual series of 'Milking Grass for Profit' spring farm walks will travel to both ends of the country in 2014.

The first walk takes place courtesy of The Earl and Countess of Inchcape at Glenapp Estate, Ballantrae, South Ayrshire on 26th march before travelling south to a farm walk hosted by Paul Richards at Trembethow Manor, Lelant Downs, Hayle in Cornwall on 10th April.

Glenapp Estate, Ballantrae

Glenapp Estates is a 5,250 hectare unit at Ballantrae, South Ayrshire, and started milk production in 2010 on a purpose built green field site. The 700 cow unit is milked through a 70-point De Laval rotary milking parlour and the unit employs a team of four fulltime staff.

The herd is block-calved in February and is grazed through-out the year, utilising approximately 400ha of grassland, in a central location on the Estate. The herd is housed from September onwards and receives a buffer-based silage ration in order to supplement its grass-based diet. Cows are dried-off in December, resulting in a traditional 60 day rest period.

Topics for discussion on the day include:

  • selecting the right grass varieties and mixtures for the situation
  • use of technology in getting the most from your grass - measuring grass growth and the weather to predict yields and quality
  • grazing and cow diets to manage the energy flush at spring turnout
  • drainage demonstration, to include GPS mapping data.

There will also be guest speakers on the day and a wide range of trade stands to visit.

A full preview on this event will be available to view in the spring edition of the Grass and Forage Farmer Magazine, out in early February.

Please ensure you wear clean and appropriate footwear.
