CHESHIRE: DEMONSTRATING RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE - ALLEVIATING SOIL COMPACTION AND UTILISING SLURRY ON GRAZING ROTATIONS

11 July 2013 10:30 at The Orchards, Twemlow, Holmes Chapel, Cheshire CW4 8DS

The DairyCo/BGS Demo farm in Cheshire is demonstrating research into practice by assessing the impact of soil aeration techniques on soil health and grass growth, and utilising slurry in the grazing rotation. This farm visit will provide farmers with the opportunity to visit two on-farm demonstration sites:

1. Alleviating soil compaction
Maintaining good soil structure is vital for grassland productivity, this demonstration aims to assess the impact of soil aeration techniques on soil health and grass growth. Chris Duller, an independant Soil and Grassland Management Consultant will discuss the different aspects of soil management.

2. Utilising slurry in the grazing rotation
Using slurry to replace (in-part and total) nutrients supplied by fertiliser application throughout the grazing season can be beneficial, this demonstration will assess sward and animal performance, and the practicality of applying nutrients. George Fisher, a nutrient management expert, will talk through the importance of nutrient selection including application techniques on farm.
