Grassland UK 2012 - Bath & West

Grassland UK 2012 - Bath & West

Grassland UK will take place at the Bath & West Showground at Shepton Mallet, Somerset this year on Thursday 10 May 2012.  Please note this is a change of venue from adjoining farmland due to the recent heavy rainfall. This popular specialist event is sponsored by Agrii and supported by Farmers Weekly.

BGS are teaming up with EBLEX and DairyCo to deliver a Forage Café

The joint stand, which will have the theme ‘Ask a forage question’, will be manned by experienced beef, sheep and dairy producers giving practical advice on all aspects of soil or nutrient management, clover, grass varieties and grazing management.

Seminar sessions will also take place on the stand during the day. Speakers will include beef producer and EBLEX board member Paul Westaway, who will talk about his experience of using home-grown protein on his Gloucestershire farm. Paul is growing drought-tolerant lucerne to feed his heifers, bulls and finishing cattle.

Also delivering a seminar will be BGS president, and dairy and beef farmer, John Downes. Shropshire-based John will discuss how low rainfall over the past two years has led to him growing red clover on the family’s organic farm.

DairyCo board member Keith Davis, who manages two profitable dairy farms operating different systems, will be looking at maximising forage use in grazing-based or high-output systems. One of Keith’s farms operates a fully-housed system using robots and yielding 10,000 litres. The other is an intensive grazing system yielding 5,500 litres, mainly from forage.

Visitors to the stand will also be able to take part in a ‘guess the weight of the grass seed’ competition to win a pair of brand name wellington boots.

The Forage Café can be found at stand 94 at Grassland UK.
