LIC (UK) Monitor Farm Open Day at Gnatts Farm

Future proofing the business

How the team at the Maristow Estate’s Gnatts Farm, near Plymouth, are developing a business that will be resilient in a volatile market will be the main topic of conversation at the second open day being held at the LIC (UK) monitor farm, in Milton Coombe, near Plymouth

The event, which takes place on November 15th, includes guest speaker Dr John Roche from New Zealand talking about the resilience model that will help deliver profit to Gnatts Farm in an uncertain production environment.

At the last event in April farmers produced a list of targets for the team at the farm, and Farms Manager, John Allen, and Herd Manager, Sarah Baker, will update progress and look at how these targets will develop as the business moves forward.

Set targets

  • Cost of production
  • Concentrate usage
  • Herd improvement
  • Milk solids as a percentage of liveweight
  • Grazing fundamentals

“A monitor farm is a farm that demonstrates a drive to increase profit by an increase in system efficiency and positive change,” says LIC Pasture to Profit Consultant Piers Badnell, who will also speak at the event. “At Gnatts Farm we have a set of financial and technical targets we can monitor progress against, and the open day will discuss these and how they fit into the business model.”
