Following their mentoring and coaching skills training in June, we now have nine Grazing Partners who are fired up and ready to go out and help other local producers with their grassland management.

The BGS Grazing Partners are:

  • Robert Craig -  Carlisle, Cumbria
  • Matthew Ingram - Ludlow, Shropshire
  • Rob Studley - Weymouth, Dorset
  • Kieran Wellwood - Newton Abbot, Devon
  • David Munday - Crediton, Devon

Beef and Sheep

  • Sam Rawling -  Cleator, Cumbria
  • Ed Higgins - Shrewsbury, Shropshire
  • Lawrence Glanville, Plymouth, Devon.
  • Steve Conisbee - Fetcham Surrey.

Some of our Grazing Partners have already been matched up with farmers who have called in asking for help with their mid season management - and the first visits have been made. We are expecting each Grazing Partner to mentor two to three producers in the pilot year.

The producer being mentored pays a £50 joining fee - but then receives up to eight hours of on-farm visits for free - the mentor is paid £200 from funding provided by either DairyCo, EBLEX, the National Trust or BGS/Duchy College Rural Business School VTS funding through the Rural Development Programme for England in the south west.

"We have recruited and trained a very enthusiastic team of mentors, and are now offering their services to producers who farm within a 50 mile radius of their farms," says project manager Sara Gregson.

"Interest in some areas has been very encouraging. In this initial year it will be a case of first-come, first-served."
