The 16th European Grassland Federation Symposium was arranged and hosted in 2011 by the Agricultural Research and Education Centre Raumberg-Gumpenstein (AREC) in Austria. With the theme of 'Grassland farming and land managment systems in mountainous regions', it attracted over 200 delegates from 30 different countries.

Mountainous areas make up 30 % of Europe's total land area. Apart from forests, natural and managed grasslands are the dominating vegetation of mountainous areas. Although mountainous grasslands in Europe differ widely in their specific conditions, there are some general features such as rough climate with lower temperatures, shorter vegetation periods and poorer soils than in the lowlands.

With this in mind, presentations at the Symposium ranged from 'climate change and impact on European grasslands', 'herbage selection and landscape utilisation by suckler cows' to 'bio-energy from semi-natural grassland'.
