Welcome to Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth is attractively located on the western edge of Wales, by the shores of Cardigan Bay. The town has traditionally been an important academic centre in Wales. The university in Aberystwyth was established in 1872, and became an independent university in 2007.

Aberystwyth has been strongly associated with the breeding of forage and cereal crops since the foundation of the Welsh Plant Breeding Station in 1919. The visionary Sir George Stapledon was its first director. Nowadays, its successor - the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences - is a leading multidisciplinary research and teaching centre for biological sciences.
