Cumbria cows extended grazing season - BGS, RABDF and DairyCo. Spring Farmwalk

Robert and Jackie Craig opened up their system at Cairn Head Farm, Ainstable, Carlisle, to the scrutiny of 165 visitors on Tuesday, March 31st. Robert told us how 10 years ago he had 80 dairy cows and 300 sheep, with milk quota costs eating into profits and making it difficult to expand. They were feeding a total mixed ration, cows were fat and it was hard work. After attending a British Grassland Society grazing conference, he joined a group with Carol Gibson and started learning the New Zealand philosophy of monitoring costs and grass.
