Wednesday, March 22, 2017

The Irish Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine have released their Recommended Grass and White Clover List for 2017.  The publication, which includes, Perennial Ryegrass (early, intermediate, late), Italian Ryegrass, Hybrid Ryegrass and White Clover varieties, is available here

The Irish national trials are based on a minimum of two sowings and take data from five stations across the country, involving cutting and simulated grazing treatments. Variables analysed consist of, total yield, heading date, ground cover score, spring/summer/autumn growth, first/second cut growth and grass quality.

“Grass is central to our efficient dairy and livestock systems and it is essential for the continued competitiveness of the sector that farmers have access to the newest high performing grass varieties,” Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said at the launch of publication on a dairy farm near Crookstown, Coounty Cork.

Ireland has designated 2017 as the Year of Sustainable Grassland with various initiatives taking place to help improve grassland utilisation and raise its profile.
