The one coloured cow in this bunch is a clue to Gavin Fowler's experimentation with crossbreds. But actually more of these evenly sized cows, with a narrow range of condition score, are crossbred than not. They are below average in terms of size, but Gavin's experience in terms of health and fertility results, was convincing evidence of the benefits. This was borne out in the survival rates by fourth lactation: Only 29% of Holsteins got to a fourth lactation, but when crossed with a Friesian this increased to 54% and for crossbreds including Swedish Red there were 66% left and 89% for Montbeliarde crosses (although these were fewer in number)
