National scale farm soil data

National scale farm soil data

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

NRM have recently reported on work they have undertaken with British Geological Survey (the other BGS) looking into whether data from farm soil samples could be applied to monitoring soil indicators at a national scale.

The work has led to a paper published in the European Journal of Soil Science, using over 200,000 soil samples, paid for by farmers over an 11-year period, to estimate national mean values and confidence intervals of five topsoil indicators (pH, Available K, Mg, Olsen P and Organic Matter).

The farm soil data set can be compared with other sets to identify any bias and explore causes for differences with may relate to farm management. One outcome is the potential for policy development informed by science.

Further information on the report is available from the Business Development Team at NRM (01344 898467).
