NVZ derogation agreed – with strict conditions

NVZ derogation agreed – with strict conditions

Friday, March 13, 2009

Defra's request for a derogation on livestock manure application limits in EU Nitrates Directive has been agreed at the EU Nitrates Committee for the UK.

The regulations limited the total amount of nitrogen from livestock manure that can be applied on a farm to 170kg of nitrogen/ha a year. The derogation allows farmers who meet certain conditions to apply up to a maximum of 250kg.

According to the agricultural Press, one of a number of the conditions will include having more than 80% of the agricultural area of the farm as grassland and farmers will need to individually apply each year for this derogation.

Defra will publish more advice and details of how to apply later in 2009.
