Welsh Farmers at a recent joint BGS – FWGS farm open day raise over £500 for the Wales Air Ambulance

Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Attendees at the recent Cream of Welsh Grassland event hosted by Andrew Owen and his family at Pantygwiail Farm near Lampeter have been commended by the Wales Air Ambulance for the funds that were raised through donations on the day.

Andrew Owen swept the broad of Welsh grassland and dairy awards in 2013 and was a UK finalist in the BGS Grassland Farmer of the Year competition. On the 12th June over 140 farmers descended on Pantygwiail Farm to find out what makes his grassland system a winning one.

Receiving £520 through bucket collections at the event, Clive Scourfield, Community Coordinator for Wales Air Ambulance, said: “What an amazing day it was! It was lovely to see such a commitment to agriculture, what was on view was outstanding.

“Thank you to everyone who came along on the day and helped to raise vital funds for us. We rely entirely on donations to fund our three helicopters in North, Mid and South Wales, so support from the public through events like this means everything to us.”

For farmers a take home message from the day was Andrew’s philosophy to learn from trial and error and never be afraid to adapt. Andrew explained that having an appreciation of the limits of the farm and not pushing them is important so that there is always a margin to buffer unforeseen errors or challenging years. He concluded by saying that he wasn’t there to tell anyone how things should be done on their farm, but to show them what is working for him and demonstrate how sometimes he has learnt the most from his own mistakes.

The event also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Mid-Cardigan Grassland Society, who have been awarded a commemorative certificate from BGS for reaching this milestone.

Many thanks go to the Owen Family for hosting the event and to the Federation of Welsh Grassland Societies and their chairman Jeff Evans for facilitating the day.

Sponsorship was gratefully received from, Farming Connect, Genus ABS, HSBC, Wynstay and Diversey without whose support and input the event would not have been possible.
