Grass Farmer of the Future Training 2014

The British Grassland Society has teamed up with the NFYFC to provide grassland training and an exciting competition for young farmers.

Following the success of last year’s pilot training day we have organised the second event to be held this September, kindly hosted by dairy farmer, Matthew Senior, BGS Grassland Farmer of the Year finalist, 2012.

Training

David Lee, BGS President 2014/15 and dairy farmer – My Grassland Story

Poppy Frater, EBLEX – Beef and Sheep Grass Budgeting

David Burton Natural England – Environmental issues and new CAP

Matthew Senior, Organic dairy farmer and host – Farm Walk

Charlotte Evans and Dr George Fisher, BGS – Practical Grassland Skills including in-field grassland plant identification and soil assessments

Tenant Farmers Association (tbc) or BGS – Grassland business planning

Competition

For the chase to win the title of Grass Farmer of the Future 2014, a scholarship to the BGS Summer Meeting 2014 and attend the BGS Grassland Farmer of the Year awards ceremony in Cheshire in October, participants will be invited to submit a 400 word summary and a poster detailing their business plan in response to a set farm scenario.

Entries will be judged on economic viability, grassland techniques, long-term potential and presentation.
