BGS Announcement – New Society Director Appointed - Monday, December 1, 2014

The Trustees of the British Grassland Society are delighted to announce the appointment of Elaine Jewkes as Society Director. Elaine brings to BGS a wealth of experience in research and commerce from her time as a scientist at North Wyke and more recently as Grassland Specialist for GrowHow UK Ltd., as well as a passion for working with farmers and all things grassland. She will take up her post from the beginning of January 2015.


Grass and Forage Crops Handbook from Limagrain - Thursday, November 20, 2014

Limagrain has developed and published a new grass and forage crops handbook for its Sinclair McGill portfolio. Specific sections in weeds, pests and disease that can cause problems in establishment and also in established crops have been included to provide growers with a blueprint for successful grass and forage production.

Cornwall to showcase the best of the region’s grassland production at annual Society gathering.

Over 250 visitors from the farming industry are expected to visit Cornwall next July as Cornwall’s local Grassland Societies play host to the British Grassland Society’s prestigious Summer Meeting.

The 2015-16 BGS Speaker List for affiliated Local Societies is now available.

It contains recommended speakers details from across the industry covering topics from Grassland Management and Silage Making to Water Resource Protection and Carbon Footprinting, with specialists from Dairy Beef and Sheep sectors also indicated.

On Wednesday 5th November BGS, DairyCo and the Foote family welcomed interested farmers to an open day led by Prof. Liam Sinclair looking into utilising lucerne as an alternative protein source, held at the Foote’s farm near Truro, Cornwall.

Inspirational Winner of Kirby Cup - Thursday, November 6, 2014

Mrs. Trees Fewster, a longstanding member and current secretary of South Yorkshire Grassland Society has been awarded the Kirby Cup in recognition of her contribution to the society and it’s wider aims.

The Kirby Cup was first presented in 1955 in memory of Mr Kirby, a Grassland Society founder member. Mr Kirby, a MAFF/ADAS adviser, was very keen on developing silage making and home-grown forage utilisation.

Winners Celebrated at BGS Awards Evening - Monday, October 20, 2014

On 17th October the British Grassland Society held its annual awards evening celebrating the best of UK grassland farming. The event was jointly hosted with Cheshire Grassland Society as the local group of the outgoing Grassland Farmer of the Year competition winner, dairy farmer Matthew Venables, and was held at Reaseheath College.
