Recommended Grass and Clover Lists 2014 - out now - Tuesday, May 13, 2014

Seven new ryegrass varieties and a red clover have been added to the 2014 Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (RGCL), which have just been published.

The lists, which include only grasses and clovers that have undergone at least six years of independent testing, offer grassland farmers an invaluable resource, enabling them to select varieties that will perform well in a particular system.

BGS are pleased to announce our 2014 Summer Meeting is being hosted and planned with thanks to the North of Scotland Local Grassland Society from Friday 4th July 2014 to Monday 7th July 2014. We will be staying at the comfortable and well appointed Thistle Aberdeen Airport Hotel situated near Dyce and visiting 8 farms across three days, showing the range of grassland farms in the North East of Scotland.

BBC Radio 4's 'Farming Today' programme has begun a week looking at 'Why Grass Matters', examining grass as a fundamental ingredient in milk and meat production. The programme asks if farmers are making the most of grass as a national resource, both for food and the environment?

Launch of the BGS 'UK Grassland Farmer of the Year' competition - Thursday, March 13, 2014

This week sees the launch of the British Grassland Society’s annual ‘UK Grassland Farmer of the Year’ competition, sponsored by DLF Trifolium and GrowHow UK Ltd.  The Society is looking for entries from BGS members or members of local grassland societies from across the UK.

The competition is designed to award the 'best' grassland farmer in the country; a farmer who demonstrates overall excellence in grassland management, as well as profitable and sustainable farming practices.

Spring Farm Walk bookings now open - Thursday, February 13, 2014

BGS, RABDF and DairyCo are pleased to announce that the annual series of 'Milking Grass for Profit' spring farm walks will travel to both ends of the country in 2014.

The first walk takes place courtesy of The Earl and and Countess of Inchcape at Glenapp Estate, Ballantrae, South Ayrshire before travelling south to a farm walk hosted by Paul Richards at Trembethow Manor, Lelant Downs, Hayle in Cornwall.
