EGF 2011 Conference - Call for papers - Friday, September 17, 2010

16th Symposium of the European Grassland Federation on 28 August - 31 August 2011.

The conference activities will take place at the Agricultural Research and Education Centre (AREC) Raumberg-Gumpenstein, which is located in the geographical centre of Austria. Grassland of various types dominates the well structured and attractive landscape that has been formed by traditional farming over the centuries.

The general topic of EGF 2011 will be:

"Grassland farming and land management in mountainous regions"

North Wales farm walk report - Monday, September 6, 2010

Our final on farm event for 2010 was again held in glorious sunshine. The BGS, FWGS, FUW, IBERS, HCC, Farming Connect farm walk hosted by Emyr, Aled and Dylan Jones at Bala in North Wales was attended by 80 delegates.

Emyr told us how keeping pastures in good condition, where it had been reclaimed from bracken, meant keeping on top of invading weeds and ensuring a thick base to the sward. He also explained how slow release fertilisers were used to avoid rapid flushes of growth, with the aim of keeping sward heights at an optimum for cattle and sheep.

NGMC '10 winner announced at Dairy Event - Thursday, August 26, 2010

This years National Grassland Management Competition's winner will be announced at the Dairy Event at the NEC, Birmingham on Tuesday 7th September.

BGS will be hosting the presentation at stand no: FF142 (Feed and Forage area) at 4pm

NVZ help on offer - Friday, August 20, 2010

Farmers with concerns about the financial implications of new Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) legislation can visit the Agricultural Mortgage Corporation (AMC) stand at The Dairy and Livestock Show on September 7th and 8th where there will be a focus on funding NVZ-related projects.

With fewer than 500 days to the full implementation of NVZ regulations on 1 January 2012, the AMC is suggesting affected farmers should start to plan with a sense of purpose to ensure full compliance and minimize the risk of future financial penalties.

BGS acquires new van - Tuesday, August 3, 2010

BGS has just purchased a second hand van for transporting equipment to the many farm walks and events we run and attend.  The van will also save us the cost and hassle of hiring cars and vans.

Seed mixtures for CFE and ELS schemes - Tuesday, July 27, 2010

A range of seed mixtures appropriate to meet the voluntary requirements of the CFE [Campaign for the Farmed Environment] and/or ELS [Entry Level Stewardship] Schemes can now be found in a new catalogue from Limagrain UK.

The 16-page colour catalogue entitled 'Enhancing the Countryside' includes more than 20 seed mixtures, categorised according to their suitability for use as wild bird seed mixtures, grass buffers, pollen and nectar providers, or catch crops for resource protection. A selection chart identifies which are eligible under the different schemes, says Limagrain UK.
