ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 

The SIXTY-FIFTH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of the British Grassland Society will be held at Greenmount College, Antrim, Co Antrim, on Monday 29th June, 2009, at 7.30pm. 

BGS new website a big hit - Monday, June 8, 2009

We have been getting good feedback about our website, which has been running for just over a month now. 

In its first month it had 1419 visitors and 1146 unique users from 54 countries. They visited a total of 5656 pages, with an average of just under four pages/visit and more than a third looking at 4 pages or more.

Lambs worth protecting against clostridia and pasteurella - Monday, June 8, 2009

With lamb prices remaining firm, sheep producers should consider vaccinating finishing lambs against pasteurellosis and the main clostridial diseases, like pulpy kidney, braxy, blackleg and tetanus.

"Lambs that receive a good intake of colostrum only have antibodies against pasteurella for up to 3-4 weeks and clostridia for up to 12 weeks," says Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health livestock vet adviser Rosemary Booth. "This means that some early season lambs are now unprotected and at real risk from these prevalent disease threats unless they are vaccinated themselves.

Lely forms new strategic alliance - Thursday, May 21, 2009

Lely, the Dutch company known for its development and manufacture of forage equipment, has announced the start of a strategic alliance with Mengele Agrartechnik AG. 

German-based, Mengele Agrartechnik AG sells high quality agricultural equipment, including loader wagons, trailed forage harvesters, manure spreaders and tipping trailers - under the brand name Mengele. 

For Lely this move means a welcome enhancement of its Forage Solutions portfolio, while Mengele can significantly strengthen its sales and distribution network beyond the German-speaking countries.

Funding has thankfully been secured for the NIAB Recommended Lists for Grass and Clover for England and Wales to continue for at least the next three years.  And you can order your copy now, free in the online bookshop.

During the winter of 2009, it became clear that reductions in levy collected in recent years would leave a shortfall for establishing trials for data to be compiled for the 2010 NIAB Recommended Grass and Clover Lists.

10,000 litre Holsteins will graze - BGS, RABDF, DairyCo Farmwalk - Friday, April 24, 2009

The amount of grazing in their diet has been gradually increasing as they have gone from one hour to a full morning outside, the 165 visitors to the farm were told. By April 7th it had steadied off at 7kg of dry matter a cow of the 24kg of dry matter a day cows are eating.
