The top moves up and down with the volume of slurry underneath and rainwater sits on top until it's full enough for it to run off the sides. Variability in slurry results shows benefit of analysis in Wales - Friday, June 13, 2008

Standard 'book figures' are a good starting point when it comes to making an assessment of the nutrients supplied from slurry. However the samples taken ina recent project showed a massive variability in nutrient content, depending on storage conditions and feeding regime. This variability, ranging from 20% to over double the book figures, emphasises the value of sampling and analysing your own slurry, says Chris Duller of the Grassland Development Centre, IBERS.

Two new guides to improve grass production now available from BGS - Monday, June 9, 2008

EBLEX Better Returns for Beef and Sheep programme has published Improving Pasture for Better Returns.

The content for this publication was provided by BGS Society Director and two BGS advisers to council, Michael Shannon and Richard Simspon (Kinsghay).

It considers the potential of grass and describes how that might be achieved from addressing compaction, to pH, phosphate and potash, choosing the best varieties for reseeding and introducing clover. There are also sections on managing a sward in its first season and controlling weeds.
