Milking Grass for Profit Farm Walk, Wales - Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Visitors to Bill Ridge's unit follow the cows down a track without a hoof mark in sight. These tracks are key to getting cows out in spring. Bill admits he is lucky to have a supply of suitable stone to build such tracks on the farm.

Jan Crichton Travel Bursary Recipients Report - Monday, March 3, 2008

Grassland production in Ireland is quite different from that in many other European countries, especially more Eastern European countries. Through the auspices of the British Grassland Societies 'Jan Crichton Travel Bursary' I travelled to the 14th International Symposium of the European Grassland Federation, held in Ghent, Belgium in September 2007. This provided a platform for many countries especially Eastern European countries to communicate recent research results.

After overwhelmingly successful Spring Farm Walks in 2007, BGS, RABDF and MDC have decided to once again join forces and create an exciting line up of farms for 2008. This year's venues are Pembrokeshire, Yorkshire, North Devon and Scotland.

BGS National Grassland Management Competition Winner Announced - Thursday, January 31, 2008

Arthur Owen was revealed as the winner of the BGS National Grassland Management Competition 2007 at the Dairy Show on Jan 30, following delayed judging due to foot-and-mouth restrictions. The national competition, sponsored by DLF-Trifoilum and GrowHow UK, is run annually with dozens of BGS affiliated local grassland societies running local competitions and entering into seven regional rounds, from which three finalists are selected for on-farm judging.

BGS responds to England's NVZ concultation - Monday, January 21, 2008

Responding to government consultations on behalf of members is a key activity of the BGS Research and Development Committee. Last December, it submitted views on England's NVZ rules, having already contributed to Scotland and Northern Ireland consultations. Here we summarise its content

BGS asked to add representative to Scottish Grass Levy Scheme committee - Saturday, December 15, 2007

The Scottish Grass Levy Scheme was initiated in 1990 to provide financial support to ensure continuation of the independent SAC Recommended List of Grasses and Clovers. It is run independently of the scheme for England & Wales and the scheme for Northern Ireland.
