 JAN CRICHTON TRAVEL-BURSARIES

The BGS Council has set aside a capital sum the income from which is to be made available for grants to support travel or education which is deemed to be furthering the objectives of the Society. General preference will be given to younger members. In 2006, additional donations in honour of BGS previous chief executive Jan Crichton will allow more awards to be made between 2007 and 2012.

The sum available will vary according to the income achieved from the capital, but it is likely to be about £1,200 in any year and typically there will be three or four recipients/year.

INTERNATIONAL GRASSLAND CONGRESS BURSARIES

Following its involvement in the IGC in Ireland in 2005, BGS has a capital fund with which to part-fund delegate attendance at future IGCs, including Australia in 20013. Individuals are likely to receive £500-£1000 towards flights and conference fees, depending on the number of and quality of applicants. In 2008 the BGS supported 6 delegates in attending the IGC in Hohhot, China. The next IGC Congress will be in 2013 in Australia.

BGS SUMMER STUDENT PLACEMENT SCHEME

BGS has funds to support two students a year at £500 each for a 4-8 week project which can take place at a college, research institute or commercial research centre, typically during the summer or Easter break. The award is to conduct a project on a grass or forage topic with relevance to the society members and to give the individual an insight into what it is like to work in research. Funding is not given to support projects which are part of the individuals normal course work.  Projects are to be match funded by a second funder or commercial company. These are available to non-members, but only to UK residents.

Note: These applications can be accepted at any time.

  • These schemes are administered by the Society's Research and Development Committee, a decision will normally be made within 6-8 weeks of the closing date or receipt of application.
  • A standard form for applications is available from the BGS office.
  • Some form of written report for BGS circulation and/or publication will be stipulated when any grant is approved.
