Farm walk – Nether Affleck, Lanarkshire

On the 14 September 2021 we enjoyed an informative farm walk at Nether Affleck, Lanarkshire, kindly hosted by Jim Baird.

The milking herd consists of 230 dual purpose crossbred cows, calving from 1 October.  A typical grazing season runs from April through to November.  Adopting rotational grazing practices has had a positive impact on the system, allowing Jim to grow and utilise grass better.  Four silage cuts are taken per year with the aim of driving milk from forage, which currently runs at over 4,500 litres per cow.
